GATTON ILLAWARRA FEATURE SHOW

After a great weekend on the Atherton Tablelands celebrating Malanda’s 100 show, our thoughts turned in great anticipation to our Impact Sale and Gatton’s 100th show.  We had 130 head of Illawarras entered, probably making this the largest Illawarra show seen in Australia for quite a number of years.  A quality sale catalogue, a well-travelled judge from New Zealand, an indication of a good roll up of interstate breeders, full cooperation from the Gatton Show Society, and a State Secretary Betty Ledger making sure all the i’s were dotted and t’s crossed, all the ingredients for a top show. I’m sure Betty thought by the end that she needed the holiday donated by herself and husband Grant for the raffle,

However, we must have missed ordering the continuation of Malanda’s great weather but there was no disaster. It was cold, cloudy, windy with quite often the threat of rain, with a slight drizzle starting prior to the sale finishing.  I am sure exhibitors and visitors appreciated the tea, coffee, cake and biscuits which were available free of charge all through the show.  Under the control of Sharyn Voss helped by other breed exhibitor’s wives it was much appreciated.  Hot meals at a moderate cost were also available to exhibitors for breakfast lunch and dinner.

However, we do feel sorry for the Gatton Show Society as steady rain set in Friday evening after the dairy cattle had vacated the stalls to enable the beef cattle to move in.  Steady rain continued most of Saturday.

Our judge, Selwyn Donald, got underway at 9am Thursday with the 130 head entered by 21 exhibitors commencing with the juvenile heifer classes.  These classes were dominated by Michael and Glenda Henry but the main work was done by son Matthew on the clippers.  They won all three broad ribbons in this section with White Park Melba 417 Junior Champion, White Park Roseleaf 142 getting Reserve Champion and Tara Cherry 12 Honourable Mention.

The Silverleigh stud of the Priebbenow family came to the fore in the Intermediates with Silverleigh Anita 72 and Silverleigh Anita 70 winning champion and reserve.  These two heifers were also first and second in the Intermediate Best Udder class.  The Henry family came in with Honourable mention.  The judge by this time was enjoying the challenge presented by the in-milk classes and this continued into the senior section.

For his champion he selected Allen Vale Blossom 16 paraded by Allen and Denise Whatman in the 5-6yrs in milk class.  Blossom is a well credentialed cow being champion at Toowoomba 2015, Reserve at Brisbane 2015, with this current win a couple of weeks after re-calving.  Reserve Champion was from the same class, a big powerful cow Myrtleholme Ladybird 2 exhibited by the Bourke Family.  A quality young cow from the 3-4 class in milk, Allen Vale Virgin 13, gained the honourable mention award.  The best udder class was won by Myrtleholme W Jenny 4.

The judge also heaped high praise on the over 7 winner, Jock Johnston’s Jondene Barbara 9.  He praised her dairy character, udder with its great width and height and carrying an enormous quantity of milk.  The judge compared Barbara to sending your grandmother out to work and expecting her to look like an 18 to 20 year old at the end of the day.

In his final selection for champion, the judge pulled out five cows.  The five mentioned in the above two paragraphs with Jenny and Barbara missing the broad ribbons.

The sale commenced half an hour after the show judging finished with the sky looking more threatening as the day went on.  Auctioneer Brian Leslie’s full sale report is listed separately on the website.  Show report – Lloyd Peters.  A comprehensive list of photos is available in the photo gallery - thanks Tanya Pratten.
