DNA TESTING PROCEDURE:
The ICSA uses Geneseek Australasia (previously University of Queensland) to conduct DNA testing of male calves.
DNA collection kits are available from the Livestock and Business Centre, Kiama or directly from the GeneSeek Australasia c/- University of Queensland, Gatton Campus, ph (07) 5460 1960, Fax (07) 5460 1565.
Step 1: Members should send their Herd Book Entry Forms to the Livestock and Business Centre. Payment for the registration fee plus the DNA test ($40 per bull) should be included.
PO Box 1388
UQ Gatton Campus
GATTON QLD 4343
If email is not available to the applicant, use the new form (see below) and post as above.
DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH THIS FORM.
A hair sample should be taken from the donor Dam at the time of flushing. As the Dam should already be registered, the cost of the Dam's DNA test forms part of the flushing costs. It is the responsibility of the owner of the donor Dam to organise it's DNA test.
The ICSA registration fee for ET calves is $40.00 which includes the DNA cost. If Parent Verification is required an additional $5.50 needs to be paid. If the calf has been previously registered without a DNA test being done a DNA test and parent verification still needs to be carried out. In this case, the DNA fee is $29.00 plus $5.50 if parent verification is required.
If both parents of the ET calf are deceased, contact the Kiama office for further information.
A few pointers from GeneSeek:
- The attached application form (above - Excel format) is quite straight forward (to GeneSeek anyway), however instructions on how to complete the form are explained in the RED Instructions tab (bottom left of page).
- Select the Test Code from the drop down box when you click on the cells below the test headers - explanations for these codes are in the orange section on the right hand side of the page. Please be aware that we have changed some of the codes for Genotyping.
- Please only nominate Sire and Dams if you require Parent Verification.
- Additional administration charges may apply if handwritten applications are received.
As GeneSeek has over 650,000 animals on their Australian database it is requested that a unique ID is provided for each animal and as much identifying information as possible (DOB, sex, name, ID) to ensure positive identification in the future. The number of idents that are the same or similar is quite large.
With respect to Parent Verification, many applications are received where a DNA Case Number is not stated for the Sires or Dams - if the breeder is unsure they are requested to contact their relevant breed society who can help them with this information. It is not the responsibility of GeneSeek to search for these details or to track down profiles from societies or overseas laboratories.
