Myrtleholme Sweetie 4 exhibited by the Bourke Family of Gladfield, may have experienced health problems in the lead up to the Ekka with pneumonia six weeks out and a bladder infection two weeks out, but it did not stop her being named Champion Cow by Judge, Brian Wilson, New South Wales. A healthy Myrtleholme Glenda 54 (J P Bourke & Co) was awarded Reserve Champion with Riverwood Lucy 2 (Ledger Family, Carters Ridge) in the Honourable Mention position.
The first broad ribbon for the Ledger Family went to the Junior Champion, Riverwood Favourite, and their second to the Intermediate Champion, Fairview Treasure 76. Treasure was purchased at the recent Fairview Stud (Wenham Family) sale and impressed both the judge and the large gallery as the standout in the Intermediate classes. Treasure was also named Best Udder and Attachment Under 3 yrs.
Senior Best Udder and Attachment went to Jondene Velda 7 (F S Johnston & Sons, Imbil) for the second year in a row, despite also experiencing health problems during the show. Velda was unlucky in the Supreme Udder, missing out on the championship by one point.
Although only having small herd numbers, Alan and Denise Whatman continued their winning tradition taking Reserve Champion Junior with Allen Vale Blossom 27 and Reserve Champion Intermediate with Allen Vale Virgin 13.
Honourable Mention Intermediate (Myrtleholme Grace 19) and Honourable Mention Junior (Myrtleholme Roseleaf 27) helped JP Bourke & Co take out the Myrtle Falconer Memorial Trophy for Most Successful Exhibitor which was presented by Anna Dingle.
Most pleasing, and a great advertisement for the Illawarra breed, were the production results which may have seen a show record broken by the Ledger Family’s Park Lane Sovereign 88 who produced 4.32 kgs of Fat Plus Protein and 49.7 litres of milk in the 24 hr on-ground milking competition, being named Supreme All Breeds Champion Fat Plus Protein and Supreme All Breeds Champion Milk Producing Cow.
The Ledger Family’s Riverwood Model 3 was named Champion in the 305 Lactation competition across all breeds with 661 kgs of Fat Plus Protein. Model was also Supreme Reserve Champion Fat Plus Protein with 3.67 kgs F+P and 46.6 litres.
The Queensland Branch took the opportunity to present Mr Robert Lester with a Life Membership of the Branch in honour of his long involvement and contribution to the Illawarra breed.
