MALENY SHOW 2016

The weather at Maleny Show is always a topic of conversation and this year was no exception purely because of its perfection; cool nights with clear, warm days.  While a smaller show, the exhibitors and their cattle love Maleny because of the great facilities provided in the dairy section with the shed, watering facilities and wash bay all second to none.  Congratulations to all the volunteers involved.

With forty-three head paraded, judge Brooke Evans, Three Creeks Stud, Laceby, Victoria, faced a few challenges throughout the day with even the 5yrs & over dry class seeing six top animals in the ring.

Broad ribbons were evenly spread with Roly Voss taking the first of the day, the Juvenile Championship with Mt Vista Tulip 12.  Reserve went to Jondene Jessie 17.

In the Intermediates, F S Johnston & Sons took the gong with Jondene Honeysuckle 6 who also won Best Udder & Attachment U3yrs.  Reserve went to Riverwood Lucy 4 (Ledger Family).

The Ledger Family’s new addition to the show team in the 5yrs & U7yrs in milk section, Riverwood Belinda, had an exceptional show winning Best Udder & Attachment 3yrs & over, Champion Illawarra Cow, Supreme Champion Udder and Supreme Champion Cow as well as All Breeds Champion Butterfat cow.  She was definitely worth breaking in.

Reserve Champion Cow went to the Ledger’s old hand, the freshly calved Rosedale Bygold Belle 2306.

Seven cows and four heifers competed in the fiercely fought On-Ground Milking Competition with Riverwood Belinda’s 31.07 litres at 5.41% 1.69kgs Fat and 3.5% 1.09kgs Protein being sufficient to take out Champion Butterfat Cow.  Most Protein went to Jondene Silky 104 who produced 1.22 kgs from 33.14 litres of milk.  In the Weight of Milk section, two cows could not be separated down to the third decimal point.  Jondene Barbara 16 and Rosedale Bygold Belle both produced 35.15 litres of milk in the 24 hours.  Riverwood Moira 2 topped the heifer section with 31.44 litres for 4.03% 1.27kgs Fat and 3.78% 1.18kgs Protein.  Not a bad effort from animals that have virtually come straight out of the paddock.

In the Supremes, the Illawarras took out all classes bar one, the Supreme Champion Juvenile.

Judge, Brooke Evans, from Laceby in the Wangaratta area of Victoria, is married to Justin. They have a 3 year old daughter and a son yet to reach his first birthday. Brooke and her sister, Samantha (now a Police Officer in South Australia) became involved in Illawarras in their early teen years, encouraged by the remnants of a dairy shorthorn stud in the herd of their father, Gordon Twamley.  Their grandfather, Bob Twamley exhibited Dairy Shorthorns at Melbourne Royal with success.  Brooke and Justin milk a herd of 200, mainly Illawarras, and exhibit teams at IDW, Shepparton and Melbourne also with success.

This was Brooke's first judging assignment in Queensland, and she enjoyed Maleny's great sunny weather, so much so she needed to get a loan of a hat.  However, the quality of the Illawarra showing really impressed her, stating this was the highest quality showing she had judged.  She was most impressed by the large number of "cherry" reds that paraded, with the good uddered in-milk cows being the highlight.

Thank you Brooke for taking time out from your busy life and young family to come to Maleny.

Congratulations to Tanya Pratten who was named Maleny Show Society’s Rural Ambassador for 2016 but who still found time in her official duties to help out in the dairy judging rings while taking photos at the same time.
