While production is usually a very successful endeavor for the Silverleigh Stud, due to the enthusiastic interest of Daryl and Leanne Priebbenow's daughter, Nicole, a showing has been added to their list of activities. Their attendance at this year's Toowoomba Royal Show has also contributed to their success. Their 2 1/2 and under-3-year heifer, Silverleigh Gina 23 (Silverleigh Maverick), was named Supreme Illawarra exhibit after taking out the Junior Championship.
Judge Geoff Cochrane placed Gina over his Juvenile Champion, the Henry family's Tara Redrose (Tara Chester), and Senior Champion, Sunny View Duchess (Sunny View Majestic).
Tara Redrose is the daughter of the 2013 Junior Champion and top-priced animal at last year's Illawarra Impact Sale, Tara Absolute Red. Sunny View Duchess (intro picture) has been highly successful for the Phillips and Nicholls families, winning the major championship at the Ekka twice in 2011 and 2012 and the reserve championship at both the Ekka and Toowoomba in 2013.
In the Supreme judging, Silverleigh Gina 23 was named Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer, with Tara Dahlia 15 (M & G Henry) named Reserve Supreme Champion Junior Udder. The Illawarra teams of three heifers and three cows both took their day, with Myrtleholme Worth Ladybird (J P Bourke & Co) also being placed third in the Supreme Senior Udder.
Congratulations to all exhibitors for presenting such a high-quality field, which is smaller than usual due to Queensland's severe drought. Ironically, a large portion of Queensland experienced heavy but welcome rainfall and flooding in the lead-up to judging day. Bad luck also prevented the Jondene Stud from attending, with the team being sent home after failing a tick inspection at Helidon, just half an hour from the showgrounds.
