Thank you Greg for judging, and your comments - ADELAIDE SHOW REPORT
I had the pleasure of judging the Illawarras and Supremes at Adelaide Royal Show. After an absence of several years, it was wonderful to return as judge, the trip was made even more enjoyable with the company of my sons Jerry and Patrick. Jerry was assisting Dean Malcolm with photos and Patrick was competing in the National Finals for parading. (Congratulations Patrick on 3rd placing). The Illawarra fraternity certainly turned out in force. Laurie Chittick, John King, Bill and Angela Lester, Tom and Kyleigh Cochrane to name a few. Special mention to Stan Johnston (Jondene Illawarras) for making the trip from Queensland with a small team.
I will admit that I did struggle in some classes as several of the cows were carrying much more body condition than I was used to, but in the end I was very happy with all three champions.
My Junior Champion was an extremely well grown, eye catching heifer, possessing the unmistakeable style of her paternal grandsire – Unstopabull (HF), This wonderfully balanced dairy heifer was a clear winner and placed second in the interbreed. I look forward to seeing her when she calves.
My Intermediate and Senior Champions were both very milky types of cows. The Intermediate just had too much dairy strength, refinement and a snug heifer’s udder for her competitors on the day.
The highlight for me was my Senior Champion Cow. There was A LOT to like about this cow and certainly was the inform cow on the day. Coming from the mature cow class, she just had so much capacity and refinement and an udder that has obviously stood the test of time.
All the Illawarra Champions looked even better on the Supreme Judging day with the other breed judges very complimentary in the praise of them.
The Illawarra Pen of 3 originally placed 2nd in the Interbreed but were relegated to 3rd later in the day after a countback.
Judging at Adelaide Royal 2025 was a great experience. Judging the Supremes was wonderful. Seeing 15 cows parading in the Pen of 3 was a great sight but seeing and judging 25 cows in the pen of 5 was awe inspiring and a highlight for any dairy farmer.
Thankyou to the Adelaide Royal for the invitation to judge. Thankyou to everyone for their warm welcome and hospitality.
Thank you to Bronwyn and all the girls for so competently managing everything at Eachamvale while the boys were at Adelaide.
